What is "klebsiellosis"?

Unlike Salmonella, Campylobacter, Pasteurella, Listeria etc which are commonly known bacteria that affect poultry, Klebsiella is not well known and cause a lot of damage to poultry. Like others, it should be added to the organisms that cause food poisoning.

Symptoms of Klebsiellosis are closely related to Salmonellosis. The noticeable symptoms include:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Greenish-yellow diarrhoea
  • Drop in Production
  • Mortality may result before symptoms are noticeable
Post mortem diagnosis include:
  • Bronzed enlarged liver with small necrotic foci, and/or congestion.
  • Engorgement of kidneys and spleen.
  • Anaemia.
  • Enteritis of anterior small intestine
  • Lungs may be enlarged
The disease can be controlled by using appropriate antibiotics such as Amoxycillin, Oxytetracyclin, Enrofloxacin and Fulratadone.

Preventive measures should be take through strict biosecurity measures, avoidance of contaminated feeds and water, isolation of infected birds etc.

ADVANTAGES OF QUAIL FARMING

Commercial quail farming business in Nigeria has many advantages. Here we are describing the main advantages of this business.
  • Quails are smaller in size compared to other available poultry birds. As a result, they require less space, food, care and management.
  • Required initial investment for starting quail farming business is very low than starting any other poultry, fisheries or livestock farming business.
  • Quails require less space for living. So you can raise numerous quails in a small place. Quails also require less labour. You can easily handle about 5,000 birds, without any help of others.
  • Quail farming business has a great ROI ratio (returns of investment). That means, you will get back your investment within a very short period of time.
  • Quails eat less amount of food, compared to other poultry birds. On an average, an adult chicken consumes about 150 grams of food daily. But an adult quail eats not more than 20 to 30 grams of food per day.
  • Chickens or other poultry birds also require a regular administration of medicines, but quails hardy require any medicines.
  • Quail products, such as their meat and eggs have huge demand and high value in the market. Right now, quail products have high value than chicken products. For an example, one kg chicken meat goes for N600, but a quail which hardly weighs 0.5 kg at maturity attracts N700. The price of quail eggs ranges between N20 to N30 and the demand is absolutely high.
  • Quails are good layers. A female quail can lay about 300 eggs yearly. Quails take less time for becoming mature and start laying. On an average, a quail takes about 5 to 6 weeks for maturing and about 6 weeks for start laying.
  • You can fulfill your daily family nutritional demands by raising a few quails, along with your other poultry birds.
  • As quail products have huge demand and high value in the market, so commercial quail farming business can be a great employment source for a large number of Nigerians.
  • Quail meat and eggs have medicinal value, and suitable for all aged people.
  • Along with the above, there are more advantages of starting quail farming in Nigeria. Start the business and you will gradually designate the rests.

CAUSES OF PROLAPSE IN LAYING BIRDS AND HOW TO MITIGATE IT

Prolapse occurs when there is extrusion of the internal part of the anus of a laying bird and this can result into pecking and may also expose the bird to secondary infection. It occurs in laying birds.

The causes of this complication need to be considered in order to know what preventive/control measures to be taken.

PROTEIN AND ENERGY INGREDIENTS IN CATFISH FEEDING

No one feed ingredient can supply all of the nutrients and energy catfish need for best growth. Commercial catfish feeds contain a mixture of feedstuffs and vitamin and mineral premixes that provide the right essential nutrients as well as the energy necessary to use the nutrients. The amount of each feed ingredient depends on several factors, including nutrient requirements, ingredient cost, availability of each ingredient, and processing characteristics.

WATER QUALITY IN FISH MANAGEMENT

Image result for photos of catfish farming in nigeriaWater supplies for catfish ponds are usually of good initial quality. However, once the water is used for culture, its quality deteriorates. This deterioration of environmental conditions is ultimately traceable to the use of feed. Despite the use of high quality feeds and careful feeding practices, relatively little of the nutrient value of feed is converted to catfish flesh. The remaining nutrients derived from fish wastes stimulate excessive phytoplankton growth. High rates of phytoplankton metabolism cause pronounced diurnal fluctuations in dissolved oxygen concentrations, dissolved carbon dioxide concentrations, and pH. Such fluctuations cause stress in fish resulting in reduced fish growth rates, poor feed conversion, and reduced resistance to disease. In extreme instances, such as depletion of dissolved oxygen, fish may be unable to adapt and will die.
