CAUSES OF PROLAPSE IN LAYING BIRDS AND HOW TO MITIGATE IT

Prolapse occurs when there is extrusion of the internal part of the anus of a laying bird and this can result into pecking and may also expose the bird to secondary infection. It occurs in laying birds.

The causes of this complication need to be considered in order to know what preventive/control measures to be taken.

Few of the causes of prolapse are:

1. Nutririon: Too high crude fat (CF) in feed is the major cause. Crude protein and Metabolizable energy also contribute if they are in excess of laying requirement. This can be controlled by formulating a feed with no more than 5% CF.
2. Physiological problem: This has to do with body conformation, especially the reproductive part. If the skeletal framework of the bird at critical stage (onset of laying) is not achieved.  Ensure standard weight gain at every growing stage. Anti stress drugs will help manage the situation.
3. Disease: Reproductive tract infection caused by Escherichia coli can also cause prolapse. Give gentamicin base antibiotics to control the infection, provided there is no resistance build up.
4. Too large eggs at early stage of laying: Monitor the level of amino acids in feeds. Give water ad libitum to ensure proper lubrication of the reproductive tract.
5. Inconsistent laying pattern: Separate laying birds from those that are not laying and feed appropriately.
